The tiny property of La Serre, with a steep, perfectly south facing vineyard of old vines just outside the town walls of this beautiful medieval town, is one of the jewels of Saint-Emilion. In fact its name, “the greenhouse,” indicates just how perfectly ripe the grapes in this privileged spot get. Which is why almost all the other vineyards on this slope sell for hundreds of dollars. (It’s right by Valandraud ($200), Pavie ($500) and Ausone ($1000)!) NO other vineyard in this most prime part of the Saint-Emilion Cotes sells for even this wine’s normal $50 price.

The Wine Spectator rates this Outstanding, and above the superb 2016 vintage, saying:

Polished, with a relatively fresh mix of cherry and raspberry coulis flavors. Light incense, tea and a flash of minerality chime in on the finish. This is mercifully far from the extracted side of the scale. Drink now through 2024.

Dunnuck also rates it 92:

The 2014 Château La Serre is a classic, charming, medium to full-bodied 2014 that offers lots of red currant, caramelized cherry, tobacco leaf and dried flower aromas and flavors. It has an old-school vibe, solid elegance, and notable balance. Drink it anytime over the coming decade.

Suckling also rates it 92 and equal to the 2016:

Extremely perfumed with flower and crushed-berry character. Hints of chocolate. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and savory acidity. Juicy and fresh. Almost Burgundian in texture. So approachable but better in 2021.
