Davis Bynum is THE pioneer Russian River winery. It’s where Gary Farrell got his start, and it was the first winery to offer a single-vineyard Russian River Pinot Noir, its 1973 Rochioli. Today it owns a superb Chardonnay vineyard on Westside Road – the most prestigious address in the Russian River Valley (Williams-Selyem, Rochioli, etc.).
To top it off, the winemaking is done by David Ramey – who knows a thing or two about making great Chardonnays. But his delicious Davis Bynum “River West” Chardonnay, at $30, sells for less than half the price of Ramey’s own Chardonnays.
With its creamy-rich flavors and exquisite balance, it’s a classic Ramey Chardonnay. But it’s a bit softer and more approachable (read “gulpable”) than Ramey’s own-label Chardonnays. Both the Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast have recently recommended this as a superb Chardonnay value at $30.
