Philippe Rossignol, brother-in-law to Joseph Roty, is one of the finest small producers in Gevrey-Chambertin. As Robert Parker says:

Rossignol manages to produce textbook examples of excellent quality generic Bourgogne Rouge, while his approach to winemaking is extremely serious.  His Gevrey-Chambertin is as good as many producer’s Premier Crus.  As with most of the top domaines, there is little manipulation of the wine, and as light a filtration as possible.

And Parker is right: his Bourgogne Rouge, from vineyards surrounding his winery, is of Gevrey-Chambertin quality. His old-vine village Gevrey surpasses many, if not most, premier crus.

2015, of course, is a fantastic red Burgundy vintage – so these are even more brilliant than usual.

Rossignol doesn’t make a non-old-vine Gevrey-Chambertin, but this should be it. Not only does it have the substance of a good village Gevrey, it has the coolness and class.

Interestingly, the “other” Rossignol, Nicolas from Volvay, has a Bourgogne Rouge that sells for $45…but it doesn’t have the concentration, or for me seriousness and breed, of this.
