Talk about artisanal: only 100 cases of this were made, in a small open topped fermenter (a la Williams Selyem Pinot Noir), punched down daily by hand, and bottled without fining or filtration. It was aged in one new French oak and three older American oak barrels.
The 37% old-vine Calistoga Charbono component draws the closest line to Venge for as Kirk Venge has long realized, this grape lends incredible color, power and concentration to the blend. (Indeed, Venge used to ferment his Sangiovese on Charbono skins for this very reason.)
The 37% old-vine mountain Syrah gives this wonderfully pure, rich flavors, as well as a certain nobility. Then there's 14% Cabernet for intensity, attack and length, and 12% ancient vine Zinfandel for fruit and spice.
With only 100 cases made, very little of this was available but we bought it all. And we're now the only place you can buy this extraordinary Napa blend.
