This is exactly what an inexpensive Pinot Noir should be, but almost never (really never) is. It’s wonderfully pure, amazing accurate and utterly, lip smackingly delicious. Of course, it’s not dark or “big” or sweet or heavy. It shouldn’t be. It should be versatile. (Pinot Noir) Graceful. (Pinot Noir) As pure as wine can be. (Pinot Noir) And delicious (Pinot Noir).

This Pinot is all those things.

But how? Or rather how for only $10? As every winemaker will tell you, there are no shortcuts with Pinot Noir. Or at least with real Pinot Noir.

The answer is this could only be done in Chile. And even in Chile, I’m shocked that they can make a Pinot like this at this low a price. For there are absolutely no shortcuts here.

It’s from a tiny 200-year-old (Viejo indeed) vineyard in the shadow of a volcano, fed by glacial waters in the famed Maule Valley, one of the best spots in South America for Pinot Noir. Classically vinified, some is even fermented in expensive Vosges oak.

This could easily pass for a Santa Barbara Pinot at $20 or more. Except I think it’s even purer and softer, and without their often acidic bite.

This wine is dangerously drinkable.
