Vinous not only rates this “Outstanding, but better than Mastrojanni’s elite Brunello in 2016, 2015, 2014 and multiple other vintages – and even over such great vintages of Mastrojanni’s Brunello Vigna Loreto as 2009, 2008, 2007 and 2003!

They say:

Bright deep red. Sour red cherry and red berries dominate the nose and the mouth, accented by mineral strokes. This is taut and energetic, with a core of bright red fruit and flowers, supported by firm tannins that provide traction and impart length on the very floral, saline finish. A truly excellent, focused and very refreshing red that will pair wonderfully across a range of dishes from pasta to burgers to grilled meat and aged cheese. It’s also a classic example of a Rosso di Montalcino made from vineyards not allowed to be used to make Brunello, with a telltale leaner, more nervous, almost metallic personality compared to other much creamier Rossos made from Sangiovese vineyards that can be used to make Brunello (and which are essentially declassified Brunellos).

And in a later review:

The 2018 Rosso di Montalcino lifts up with a dusty and floral display, gaining richness in the glass as it reveals bright strawberries with hints of tangerine, shaved cedar, leather strap and white smoke. It’s soft and pure, casting red berries and mineral tones across a feminine frame, with vibrant acids which add a juicy feel to the expression. Cooling herbal tones linger over a gentle tug of tannin, yet the 2018 is already so delicious and remarkably pretty.

For those who crave classically-styled Brunello, but prefer a gentler price.
