The original Zinfandel – and
in fact, Schaal sells it as Zinfandel in Europe. But while it shows the brawny,
unbridled richness of a good California Zinfandel, there’s a distinctly Italian
character to this, too.
I’ve had a lot of Italian
Primitivos, but never one that balanced richness and character with polish and
flair quite like this. But then, that’s one of Schaal’s gifts – he manages to
make wines very true to their origins, but also uniquely appealing.
If you want a good sturdy
yet smooth house red/party red/Tuesday night pizza or pasta red…well, you won’t
do any better than this.
When’s the last time you saw a 95-point
old-vine Zin for this low price?
