To say that Ultraviolet is a wine I have admired for a long time would be understating it. I was living in Napa when the first vintage, 2009, was released. It made quite a splash at the time, although it was a different wine and price back then. There was still a shortage of people making Napa cabs that taste like cabernet back then, no additions, no makeup, just organically farmed grapes from a great vineyard made well. It doesn't hurt that Samanta Sheehan was one of the most respected winemaking minds of that up-and-coming generation. That wine was from a site in St Helena, and that wine sold for around $35 if I remember correctly.

A few years ago Samantha changed the direction of Ultraviolet a bit, and used the best North Star possible to do it, she wanted to make the wine she wanted to drink but couldn't find in the market. A Cabernet that retailed for much less that had no additions, was site specific, did not have RS or manipulation. This actually sounds just like what you all are looking for when I taste with you. Well, she crushed it. If you taste a lot of lower price California cab you are used to 8 or so grams of rs, mega purple, and who knows what else. This is not that.

 

Sam found a site in the Red Hills AVA, but not in the clay part, in the hills looking down on Lake County. This site looks like mars, red from the volcanic soils, rocky as can be, and up around 2,500 ft in elevation. There is literally a river of magma flowing some miles below the surface, this is some real deal volcanic soils. From those volcanic soils, especially versus clay, you are going to have more structure, and more acid. The berries are small here, this is everything you want from a cabernet site. She supplements that with 5% of cab franc from Coombseville. Both sites are farmed organically, the wine is aged in all neutral oak, and aside from small amounts of sulphur there are no additions.
